Thoughts #1: Edge of Darkness

Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, The Legend of Zorro), Edge of Darkness is Mel Gibson’s first return to the big screen as an actor since his appearance in Signs.
Edge of Darkness is the story of Thomas Craven (Gibson), a veteran homicide detective who witnesses the brutal murder of his daughter. After a moment of grieving Craven moves to seek out answers in his daughter’s death.
What is claimed to be a “father-on-a-revenge-spree” film, grows to be much more as the seemingly random shooting of his daughter thickens into the Senator’s office and a large private R&D company in charge of weapon’s manufacturing.
Much like Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson’s on screen presence is not tarnished by his tabloid life. Despite Mel’s personal belief’s or problems, he is able to bring strong emotion and conviction to this film.
The film’s best scenes are those between Ray Winstone and Mel Gibson. Their good guy / bad guy banter is pure entertainment and great evidence of two incredible actors. The film was surprisingly good in may ways. I would not recommend one to seek this movie out, but at some point add it to your Netflix queue.
